Monaco Mercerized Cotton + Taytay Fabric Market
8:26 PM
A couple of weeks ago, I was sourcing crochet thread to add to my collection of crochet and knitting materials. I don't have a lot of threads and yarns but I think I'm starting to hoard. I have a few Merino yarns that my boyfriend was kind enough to get me when he went to Canada, and some medium and bulky weight yarns from Gantsilyo Guru. I love Gantsilyo Guru because they have a wide variety of threads, yarns and tools. You can visit their store along Shaw Boulevard but the traffic in the area can get pretty bad or you can also order online, which is much more convenient. There are also a lot of online stores that sell materials but since I live in the Ortigas side of Cainta, I thought, hey, I can get myself a few more balls of thread with the amount I'm paying for shipping. There are also a lot of stores in Divisoria that sell at much cheaper prices but it's so far from where I live.
The specific material I am currently looking for are the Monaco Mercerized Cotton Threads because my stash is composed of medium to super bulky yarn and I want to get a feel of working with the much thinner thread. The Monaco threads are locally made and are cheaper than the imported Aunt Lydia's Crochet Threads. According to the Monaco Mercerized Cotton Thread Product Information, the thread weight is 8/3, meaning it's a 3-ply thread and is slightly thicker than the Aunt Lydia's size 10 but thinner than the size 3.
I checked online shops and their prices vary from P35-P50/roll of 175m plus shipping fees. I also read on blogs and in forums that in Divisoria, you can get each roll for a little less than P30 or even down to P25 if you're buying wholesale. It may be much cheaper to buy in Divisoria but with the summer heat and it's distance from where I live, going to Divisoria isn't an option. I also heard that there are thread stores along Ortigas Extension near Rosario, Pasig but I haven't tried going there yet. With that in mind, I went to the Taytay Fabric Market, hoping to find some at a reasonable price of maybe P35.
So to my friends from Rizal, here are the shops where I found thread! There aren't a lot of shops selling crochet thread because it's mainly a textile market. I didn't include some stores I went to that day because I didn't find crochet materials there. I've included links to Google Maps in case you plan on checking them out.
Star Fabric Accessories

Star Fabric Accessories is located beside a gas station along Rizal Avenue. I've been to this shop a few times before for fabric and notions. I was able to get some crochet thread but they didn't have a wide variety of colors available. They only had a few colors on display, which also looked like old stock. The old woman manning the shop said that they're priced at P45/roll. I asked if they had more colors and she gave a piece if paper to list the colors I wanted. She asked one of her staff to go to their bodega to get the colors I was looking for. It took him a good 20 minutes before he returned but to my dismay, he was only to get basic colors. I grabbed a roll (2 for both black and white) per color and they gave me a discounted price of P40/roll. I asked them if they knew where I could get more colors but they were unable to refer me a different store.

Secondhand Thread Shop

I'm sorry but I wasn't able to get the name of the store but this is also located along Rizal Avenue and it is much closer to Taytay Public Market. If you're coming from the Public Market, it's located on the right side of the road before you even reach the Iglesia Ni Cristo Church. This store sells secondhand rolls of thread that are priced per kilo. I was only able to get one color and based on the packaging, the rolls are ancient! The good thing about my visit here is that the lady at the counter was kind enough to share with me where I can get different colors of Monaco thread.
Rose Mart Garment Materials
Rose Mart is my new favorite store! They have a wide variety of both Monaco and Cannon Crochet Threads!!!! I'm sorry I wasn't able to take a photo of their display but I promise to take photos during my next visit. I was in a hurry because, unfortunately, the bridge near the store is under rehabilitation so the road in front of the store was closed from vehicular traffic. Luckily, the road is open to pedestrians so I decided to park my car in one of the side streets. Rose Mart is easy to find as it is located beside the Taytay Maternity Clinic and most of the people in the area know the location of the store so don't hesitate to ask. They sell at P34/roll for the light colors while the dark colors are at P35/roll so I got a dozen rolls of various colors. If I remember it correctly, the Cannon rolls are more expensive so I didn't bother getting.
So there, I hope you find my post informative. If you have any questions or if you have suggestions as to where crochet and knitting supplies are available near the Cainta-Taytay area, feel free to comment below!
