Germinating Cacti Seeds

10:08 AM

Today’s post is about my first attempt at germinating cacti seeds! I recently bought a few packs of Yates Cactus Mix from True Value, Shangri-La Plaza. Each pack is worth P99 and it consists of probably 100 seeds. Actually, I counted the first 30 seeds and estimated the rest of the contents. Hahaha! The type of cacti seeds were not specified in the pack so I guess I’ll have to wait 2–3 years before I actually find out what I’m taking care of. I also bought a pack of 6 Miracle Kabuto seeds from Zen Cactus. I’m really wishing this will be successful! So here goes the tutorial:

Materials:
Cactus Seeds Well-draining soil (mine consists of 1 part perlite and 2 parts potting soil - the potting soil I got is already a mixture of ipa, soil, sand(I think), fertilizer, etc)
Microwaveable containers with lids (you can also opt to cover a shallow pot or the same container with a cling wrap, or even put your pot into a ziplock)
Water
Screwdriver (or any tool to make holes)
Shovel (mine is so cute! It’s a mini version! Haha!)

Instructions:

1. Grab your microwaveable containers and screwdriver. Make holes by piercing and twisting the bottom part of the container with your screwdriver. I found it best to lay the bottom part of the container on a hard surface so that it won’t break when you pierce it.

2. Pour soil into the container about an inch high. Push down the soil lightly.

3. Spray water on the soil to make it moist but make sure you do not overwater it.

4. Microwave your soil and container for about a minute. You are not really sterilising the soil but pasteurizing it.

5. Scatter the seeds on top of the soil and cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. Lightly spritz water on the top soil.

6. Put the lid on your container or cover it with a cling wrap. Mark your container with the type of seeds you are trying to germinate and the date when you did.

7. Now it’s time to wait for about 3 months. Haha! No, really. You can’t really do much about it until then. Just make sure the containers are placed in a warm place with indirect sunlight. Good luck!!

So hey, I’m posting from the beach right now! I’m such a loser, it’s my first beach trip for this summer.
